For the final semester of undergrad, this research paper thesis under the Chancellor’s Honors College at the University of Tennessee focuses itself on relevant local architecture once found spread throughout East Tennessee. Following in the footsteps of the Aydelott research writing, this essay focuses on local materials of the region including clay, rivercane, and timber and how the Indigenous history evolved throughout the region.
The research included traveling to Cherokee, North Carolina, the closest Cherokee reservation that remains on their traditional lands in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The town includes the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and the Qualla Arts and Crafts museum that helped understand the cultural traditions and architectural knowledge of the native nation.
